Pred nama je lik Ivana Krstitelja. Pred nama je stvarna osoba a ne izmišljen lik. Ivan je obraćenik koji poziva na obraćenje druge ljude. Dolazi iz svećeničke obitelji. Njegov otac Zaharija je židovski svećenik. Evanđelist Matej u samom opisu Ivanove odjeće i hrane želi naglasiti da se on odrekao svoga statusa. Sveti Ćiril Jeruzalemski opisuje ga ovako: “Živio je u siromaštvu i ljubio samoću, bez da je mrzio ljudsko društvo. Hranio se skakavcima, kako bi pružio krila duhu, i medom, kako bi naviještao poruku slađu od meda.“ Dakle, samo je jedan razlog Ivanovog isposništva: navještaj Kraljevstva nebeskog koje dolazi u Isusu Kristu. Sigurno je da je Ivan prije izvanjske promjene preživio duboku nutarnju promjenu.
Njegovo djelovanje događa se u Judejskoj pustinji, mjestu praznom od Božje prisutnosti, a ne ljudstva, i nenastanjenom Duhom Svetim, a ne ljudima. Time želi propovijedajući naglasiti napuštenost onih kojima je poruka bila upućena. Poruka njegovih propovijedi je sažeta u nekoliko riječi: „Obratite se, približilo se Kraljevstvo nebesko.“ Ivan je glas a Krist riječ. Bez riječi glas ne vrijedi ništa, ali da bismo čuli riječ potreban je glas. Ivan je pripravljao ljude na krštenje. Krstili su se oni koji su čuli propovijedanje. Tako je krštenje bilo potvrda da je riječ koju su čuli mijenjala njihove živote. Što Ivan poručuje nama? Poziv na svetost i obraćenje najlakše se ostvaruje u Zajednici. Poslanje Crkve je da podržavamo jedni druge u svetosti i odluci o nasljedovanju Krista. Zato je bitno biti član Crkve. Jer se onda možemo osloniti na braću i sestre koji će nas poticati kada posustanemo, pridržati kada posrnemo, ili vratiti u realnost kada se zanesemo pretjeranim entuzijazmom i poletnom energijom.
A ništa od toga nije moguće ako Zajednica nije ljubavlju prožeta i okupljena oko euharistije. Danas molimo u zbornoj molitvi: „Svemogući i milosrdni Bože, dok hitimo u susret tvomu Sinu, daj da nas zemaljske brige i obveze ne smetu; nebeska mudrost tvoje riječi nek nas uvede u zajedništvo njegove sudbine!“
